Poet’s Beat ~ Emancipation by Elizabeth Alexander Accompanied by Miles Davis’ Freedom Jazz Dance

To wrap things up for February I decided that we would end on a happy note.  Freedom comes in many forms and styles.  Freedom to be who you are and to be able to freely create your life, your mind and your spirit is what Improvisation means to me.    Leaning into life full throttle and not trying to control everything and not diminishing ourselves in any way is the kind of freedom afforded to all of us.  Charlie Byrd was one of my dad’s favorite also mine, speaks from the heart- “A person should design the way he makes a living around how he wishes to make a life.”  So get your kicks on because the vista of Freedom is filled with both rough and smooth terrain.  Peace Out!  JBC 😎

Emancipation

by Elizabeth Alexander

Corncob constellation,

oyster shell, drawstring pouch, dry bones.

Gris gris in the rafters.

Hoodoo in the sleeping nook.

Mojo in Linda Brent’s crawlspace.

Nineteenth century corncob cosmogram

set on the dirt floor, beneath the slant roof,

left intact the afternoon

that someone came and told those slaves

“We’re free.
