Sounds In the Wind

First Love

The first muted note

That caresses your face

A dream that spoke

Beating in a syncopated space

Covering your heart’s sacred place.

 

Discordant suffocating breath

Ravaging the spirits with ornamented ghost notes of death

This is the choice and the sphere

Wild dancing kicks through fears.

 

This is the song’s laconic ennui

Nestled close to the quick

Evaporating and setting you free

Scented riffs that do the trick

Through sounds tortuous licks.

 

Sounds of a child’s love that pleases

Lingering in your ears

Making you do anything with ease

Choreographed an improvised life, replacing fear

Remembering the first sounds of love always appear.

In music, a call and response is a sequence beats or musical notes played by different musicians, where the second sequence of beats or musical notes is heard as a direct commentary on (response) to the first. It corresponds to the call-and-response pattern in human conversation and is found as a basic element of musical form, such as verse-chorus form, in many traditions.

In the Sub-Saharan African cultures, call and response is a pervasive pattern in public gatherings  with respect to civic affairs in addition to in religious rituals and vocal and instrumental musical expression.   Notably, in African-American music it is prevelant

in a myriad of forms i.e.: gospelbluesrhythm and bluesrock and rolljazz and hip hop.  I love it when a characteristic of jazz, sound and words can evoke so much imagination and passion.  This is the highest form of mindfulness meditation and sound that is a blessing to my life.  Peace Out!  JBC 😎 & ❤

A successful alternative to psychotherapy today would be to listen to music.   Listening to Jazz or Bach or your favorite music serves as a mindfulness practice. It begins with creating an intention of consciousness the difference is in mindfulness meditation is “Listening”  is unique and distinct from a mindfulness “Breathing” practice.

Building Ur Listening Vocabulary

Jazz like all music is a universal language of energy, a “vibe” of emotions and happiness. It speaks to our core desires and feelings. It spans language barriers and political borders.  It is a powerful means through which beings, humans and animals,  can connect to one another.  In a mindfulness practice, you develop an internal and interrelational conversation and thought process focused on listening and seeing with our whole being developing a mutual understanding.  Jazz functions as the catalyst and our conversation is the processing and substrate to a deeper understanding.  This “vibe” or energy flows through Jazz is to heal and transform our lives on a daily basis

As with any great Art, Jazz touches the qualities of our experience that are beyond words. Wisdom, insight, love, fear and joy can all be a conversation traversing the subtle textures and vibrations of the musical palette. Appreciating  jazz and visual arts gives us more than an aesthetic pleasure ~ “Listening” is  an act of compassion.

In my memoir “The Sound I Felt” it is the fundamental perspective that has given me a deeper appreciation and understanding  of jazz and life as I know it.  It is constantly changing and rearranging our visual and acoustic sensibilities giving us a unique insight into our personal experience with life.

Since May 2003 jazz has brought me through the death of my parents and finding a way using mindfulness improvisation to living a full life with Breast Cancer.   Here is what listening to jazz and visual arts has transformed and healed my life.  I invite you to join me and give a listen to what this song brings to where and who I am today.

We all suffer.  I particularly love jazz contemporary and classic styles.  It is a metaphor of life that is looks at life giving a deeper understanding of our own inner-world of thoughts, emotions and feelings. There are inner-terrains and vistas that helps me to find clarity of shape, arrangement, composition, timbre and rhythm bringing to light a catharsis and release through self-expression and improvisation in my daily life.  Jazz is healing.  It is a communion between jazz arrangements and compositions that are orchestrating the kind of energy that is extant  I believe the decision is just below the surface of every thought, in a context of texture, vibe, energy and mindfulness attention that in itself  creates a rejuvenating and healing practice.  Each song gives a different energy in concert with what is going on outside and inside of our souls.  Giving a sense of freedom from the anchors and thorns of life’s pain and suffering and gives a feeling that is suspended in time and space of contentment in that moment.

Brain Research has documented the effects of deep listening to specific kinds of music (jazz) to be fundamentally good for our bodies, minds and bodies and spirits.  There is an emerging field of music therapy  that captures the psychological and physical effects of listening to music.  Here are a few tips to develop a mindfulness meditative relationship with music,

  1. Take 5 – set time aside to select a song and a chair, couch, by the marina…centering yourself.
  2.  Creating a comfortable place to fully commit your attention to the music.  Designate the space as your own private concert hall. Light Candles and scent the air. It is what you feel would make this unique for you ~ a personal private place for contemplation and relaxation.
  3. Turn your phone, e-mail, etc. off so you are not distracted and make this a time you’ve chosen to meditate.
  4. Eat before so you can avoid getting hungry or thirsty in the middle of the piece.  Prepare a small snack and herbal tea to regulate your energy.  designate what your Intention.  Allow any thoughts and images associated with this contemplation rise and fall through your awareness.  No judgment or critical thoughts.
  5. Take a few deep breaths and relax into the sensations of your body. Rest with your breath for a minute or two.
  6. If your attention wanders, gently remind yourself to return to the sounds and sensations of the music.
  7.  If the music stirs your emotions or thoughts, you can include those inner experiences as an extension of the music and appreciation of your practice.
  8. When the music ends remember to thank yourself, the musicians, the composer and God and the Universe for giving you this time and opportunity to listen. — Take a few minutes to digest the experience. You can do this by breathing and meditating or just letting go. You can start by writing a poem or in your journal about the experience.  Or paint, dance or sitting still to take it all in.

Free Write Friday ~ Listening for the Riffs 2 Heal My Soul featuring “Autorretrato” by Vincent Amigo

Originally, a riff referred to any imaginative improvised melody.  In Jazz, riffs are musical responses and conversations musicians have among themselves that are telling stories of the challenges that life brings.  History has demonstrated that jazz has been “racialized”, “genderized” and “Americanized” with respect to identity since it dropped into American culture over 75 years ago.  Folks may not like it but they sure know what jazz is.  Jazz in literature has helped construct histories, create discourses and builds communities.  I learned that in “jazz language” riffs are artistic expressions that involve identity and are multidimensional critiques on our social and cultural condition.  It is the harmonic and melodic expression against the back-beat of the rhythmic flow of the counter-melody of our lives.

Since moving to the Bay Area from Seattle, the past six months have presented so many counter melodies and riffs brimming with painful emotions as well as physical manifestations.  These riffs continued until I created a break in my response to that pain and circumstance.  It has become very enlightening. Not feeling physically good varies from day to day.  Establishing and creating a groove and feeling of well-being is helping me to find a flow that works for me.  Improvisation in jazz is developing a language of the cultural riffs and identities through sentient experiences.  In my case the riffs of pain are a part of living and thriving with breast cancer.  I am learning to accept it.

Now I respond very quickly.  Now ask myself, am I maintaining my integrity? Do I do what I say I am going to do and respect and recognize other’s boundaries? Do I ask for forgiveness?   That has been something that has been on my mind and proven to be very liberating. . I find comfort being alone with my heart. The solitude awakens me to finding nuances in the melody and the finer points my existence..  I have been running from painful riffs most of my life.  Now I respond differently with God’s grace to open my heart and mind to the beauty that surrounds me.   Beneath the lush green grass beats a heart that is uniquely mine.

Changing the riff to a melody that is set to a different rhythm allows me to get into a groove that is healing and transforms my soul.  Not letting the well-meaning gardeners disrupt my balance and groove.  My center is dynamic and dependent upon the connection to that sacred space. It is within as well as surrounds me in a golden light that is only shadowed by painful memories. But those memories are just signs and guideposts of where I need to look in order to find my true center. I am listening to my heart….I am remembering 1965.  It was a year full of racial tension − riots, misfortune and misery that was ringing out everywhere.  I have no agenda now.  My soul speaks and inspires me to share my experiences and dreams.  I realize I have spent most of my life-giving everything away.  Now I just wanna’ keep the rest for myself.  Life is tragic when you have not lived your dreams.

Enough of mindlessly taking the path of least resistance and drowning out all connections I have to my truth.  The glorious part of 1965 when I was eleven years old was that became the year that Jazz provided the ambient substrate of my soul’s expression.  It was safe,   It was impenetrable and had washed away the misery that was blazing through the souls and streets of civility, compassion and love.    So just for today, I am looking forward — all I see and feel  is a joy and sense of wellbeing when I am writing with jazz as my muse filling my heart and soul with a love supreme. .How about you?  What would be your muse?  What are the riffs that have changed you?    I leave you with my favorite sound

Inner peace is simply acknowledging and accepting who you truly are.  This is the only way to find our true self by becoming completely relaxed, focused and centered.  Mindfulness Meditation and improvising by focusing on your breathing and observing your feelings and emotions as they float by.  No judgments or expectations are allowed.  However,  when distractions will present themselves just acknowledge them and deeply breathe them out.  Breathe in joy and peacefulness.  Rilke’s poem creates and evokes images let them in and see where it will take you.  The beauty is  that you can do this anywhere.  Peace & Love Out!  JBC 😎 & >3

Wishing you a Fabulous New Year!  Especially during these trying times, the sounds from the fog of terrorism, cancer, and grief have placed us in the shadow of a Love So Supreme.  Someone asked me once, “What do you do when the holidays come?  Aren’t you lonely?  Well, since Mother’s Day 2003, I missed my mom because she was my “BFF”.  Now I realize that when I am caught in that fog I listen intently to see a small and gentle light that leads me to a peaceful feeling − a warm embrace holding me through my tears letting me know that I, by God’s Good Grace am Loved.  Resolutions elude me when I am awakening to every moment that life brings.  Grace and mercy flow within the same sound.  Leaving footprints in my heart navigating me through the thorns of pain, sorrow and despair knowing that there will always be a something or someone that screams  keep on keepin’ on till the veil of suffering is pierced by truth and compassion.  I have discovered that we are never alone…

Happy New Year to all of the blogs I follow and those that have graced my life by following me.  I appreciate each and every single one of U.  So on that sound, here is a poem by Richard Jackson entitled “Nothing But Trouble” written over 40 years ago sending you Season’s Greetings, take care. Nothing but Trouble

So there was Alexander Graham Bell hanging around the back
of my mind. Some short circuit or another had confused him
with a barn owl, the barn owl with a dove, and the dove
with a blue heron. Just when you think nothing is there
it appears like an unseen planet you know only by the way
its sun wobbles. But why did he suddenly appear here
in the cavernous Basilica di San Francesco at Arezzo? Like us
with all the space between our atoms, or all that space between
planets, it is mostly nothing. At the far altar is the famous fresco
of Adam dying. Bell wanted to invent a machine to talk to
the dead. That’s why he seemed so blue. We could say he’s like
this or like that, but “like” really only tells more of what he is not.
Scientists tell us you can only see the real world by not looking
at it. When you look you change it. Is that why Terri’s picture
of the Moose came out blank? It seems like more trouble
to see things than to imagine them, so I’ll go on here. Five year old
Emily says there is a little world inside each flower. Some
Begonia petals are called Angel Wings. Her sister,
Anna, reads messages from her dead friend in vapor trails.
When we arrived at the town buried beneath the dam’s waters
there was nothing but what we could imagine, and that was enough.
It’s hard to call anything what it is. Ezekial ate God‘s scroll
to learn his words. Most of the wall frescoes here have been
painted over because it was too much trouble to keep them up.
Sometimes you can catch the faintest outline of one before
it dissolves like a cloud. There’s no secret that is secret.
The glowing clouds in each galaxy will soon broadcast
what laws have formed them. Terri says the bottoms
of cumulous clouds are flat because that’s the way children
draw them. The void doesn’t care what laws we have for it.
Sometimes she fingers through the abandoned lives left hanging
on the clothes rack at the second hand store. When you see them
fluttering in the rafters above the altar you could believe the soul
lives in the doves’ coo. The trouble is they are trying to get rid
of them. Nothing but trouble the Sexton mumbles over the rattle
of his key chain. My friend Amy says she avoids trouble by
becoming invisible. Sometimes we’re just a scale in need of a weight.
Trouble is when you think you are invisible and you are just trouble.
Meteors are invisible until the burn up in the atmosphere.
It’s what kills things that makes them visible. Levinas says
that we are involved in everyone’s death. That means the nameless
juvenile killed in the drive by on 36th street, and the girl gutted
for attending school in Afghanistan. Flocks of souls rise form
the desert like a mirage. The tongues of the silent sit like coffins.
They say nothing of the acid thrown in the girls’ faces, nothing
about what God might mean. They are no Ezekials. Nor are we.
But what was Alexander Bell supposed to mean in all this?
That the only worlds that endure are what we invent?
He wanted to build a clock for a time beyond our own.
Its beds are empty. Its rivers run dry. Oars with no boats.
One thing begins to cancel out another until nothing is left.
There are such abandoned places inside me, I don’t know.
Spinoza said the soul is just the body’s idea of itself.
He thought God was a precise but invisible clock.
This isn’t getting me anyplace. Maybe I should have
ignored Bell and started with the heron. I saw a perfect
white one fly over the Thai restaurant the other night.
There are too many ideas flickering here like those votive
candles trying to fill the hollow spaces of the church.
Some of them flicker then turn into invisible daylight stars.
In the beginning the universe was nothing but a quantum see saw.
In some Churches the candles are electric which takes us
back to Alexander Bell. I have to find a way for him to leave.
All of our light is borrowed from somewhere that’s
no longer where it was, the galaxies, the sun, our own
solar system all running away from each other
and leaving a kind of vacuum we’ll never fill.
No wonder the figures in our dreams always disguise
who they really are. There’s hardly anyone in this church
except the woman mourning at the side altar for her
dying husband. What do we call the space we leave behind?
Aeneas grasped the empty air he thought was his mother.
Is that why we feel a presence when there’s nothing there?
Leonardo’s lost Battle of Anghiari probably lies hidden
behind Vasari‘s great painting in the city hall of Florence.
Or it may not. X-Rays will tell us. But when you take away
anything there is still the space it occupied. It’s nothing.
No one except Goya knew how to show war’s real horrors
like his man impaled on a scrub oak tree, something
like what they’ve done in Bosnia. Or to Neda Agha Soltan
pictured shot and dying on a Tehran street by a cell phone
Bell once imagined as his visible speech machine.
If only we could be invisible to the shadows holding guns.
We never know how many beats are left in our hearts.
Still, if you do nothing you might as well be invisible.
Nothing lasts forever. The clocks are frowning. The soul
sounds hoarse. A farmer plows up a decades-old bomb.
There are baby stars being born in the empty space
of the universe. When they die they turn into diamonds.
No one knows why one of the stars in Orion is shrinking.
Most of what I’ve mentioned here came from text messages.
The tourists phones glow like tiny halos over their words.
We’ve begun to decipher radio waves from the big bang.
Is it true that we came from nothing? that those figures
in the backs of our minds are nothing but short circuits
or like the names worn off of old tombstones? like these
shattered frescoes searching for their originals? What
about you who I’ve kept hidden here all this time? Sometimes
we leave our feelings in the mirror for the next person
to put on. Our promises leave without closing the door.
They wander troubled among our dying neurons. That’s why
we can hear the heart’s despair in that little ringing in
our ears. Maybe the soul is a player piano we pretend to play.
In the altar fresco Moses is saying his last words to everyone
he’s loved. For a moment he seems to want to reach for
whatever last vision walks in shadow across his brain.
I can hear the Sexton starting to close the doors.
I think each of these sentences can fit into their own twitter.
How far have the light photons around us traveled?
The lines from here to there are all down. The man outside is
selling postcards from the Rapture. It doesn’t include me.
This used to be troubling but now its nothing.

Wishing you a Fabulous New Year!  It’s that time again for Resolutions.  I want to awaken listeners around the world to the powers of jazz and prose to heal and transform individuals and communities.

Fifty Shades of Jazz | Improvising Life Through Jazz © is my personal blog that reflects my mindfulness meditations, healthy living style, and thoughts on my transformation and healing journey living with complications from Breast Cancer and GBS (an autoimmune neuropathy).  When I apply Jazz and Zen Mind philosophy aka Improvisation has saved my life.  It began in 1997 when my mom and myself in the battle with Breast Cancer.  This blog will be filled with all things Jazz in entertainment, knowledge and wisdom pertaining to spirituality, philosophy, social commentary, music, health and various other thought-provoking subjects.  It continues to be my dream to garner sharing our experiences through comments and suggestions and Guest Posts that would evoke, exchange, and express our experiences of the blessings, beliefs and the right frame of mind we have felt and listened to along the life journeys that are engaging and inspiring.  On that note….

I found this wonderful post on the Live Write Thrive website by Robin Patchen that takes a look at cadence and rhythm as it relates to Searching for the Poetry in Story.

“Readers long for beauty in words the way tourists seek out beauty in landscape and architecture. Perhaps they fly to Paris for the wine and cheese, but they’ll admire the Notre Dame on the way to dinner, and the trip will be richer for it.

Cadence is rhythm. It’s that thing that makes you need to finish a limerick or lyric. If I were to sing “The wheels on the bus” Everybody in the room would say or at least think, “. . . go round and round.” You can’t help yourself because cadence longs to be finished. Poetry has a rhythm, and rhythm longs for completion.

Beautiful writing is about more than cadence though. It’s also about choosing lovely words, choosing the right words—those that reflect the scene and mood. It’s about letting people see beyond the words to the setting and characters and emotions beneath.”

It’s , many of us reflect on all that we’re grateful for. High on my list this year, as every year, are books and blogs. I cannot imagine my life without them and my friendly bloggers.  Here is a guided meditation for positivity throughout this Holiday Season that I use since I request a table for one,  I am never alone now.  Here is a gift for you!

Positive Thinking Meditation: Endorphin Meditation with Positive Affirmations

Focusing on the positives, and blessings rather than the negatives in our lives makes a real difference with respect to how we feel on a daily basis. It motivates us, enables us to feel inspired, brings hope, nurtures healthy self-esteem, and style builds self-confidence and makes us happy.  Neuroscience suggests that we can train ourselves to feel good and think positively ~ it’s a learned ability.  With practice and consistency we grow the neural pathways and collect cellular memory in our brain to take us whenever we need it. It’s a powerful yet gentle way to deal with depression.

I have desperately been trying to live simply and embrace nature by just leaning in and letting things happen spontaneously.  To not allow my ego to control or judge everything. It is so easy to get in our own way by imposing our desires, hidden agendas, ambitions, and ideas of what is right or wrong.   So just for today, let’s change the format a bit using poetry and the above meditation to set the cadence of our life’s transformation taking us to the life that is meant for us.

If I Had My Life to Live Over

If I had my life to live over,
I’d dare to make more mistakes next time.
I’d relax, I would limber up.
I would be sillier than I have been this trip.
I would take fewer things seriously.
I would take more chances.
I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers.
I would eat more ice cream and less beans.
I would perhaps have more actual troubles,
but I’d have fewer imaginary ones.

You see, I’m one of those people who live
sensibly and sanely hour after hour,
day after day.

Oh, I’ve had my moments,
And if I had it to do over again,
I’d have more of them.
In fact, I’d try to have nothing else.
Just moments, one after another,
instead of living so many years ahead of each day.
I’ve been one of those people who never goes anywhere
without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat
and a parachute.
If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over,
I would start barefoot earlier in the spring
and stay that way later in the fall.
I would go to more dances.
I would ride more merry-go-rounds.
I would pick more daisies.

If I could have a grown-up Christmas wish, it would be to eradicate the bully voices that plague so many writers. Although I understand, too, that it’s the struggle that makes the achievements all that much more rewarding.

I’d love to hear from others of you who’ve found helpful strategies for writing through the loneliness, for connecting to your writing even if and when no one is listening. Part of this is a practice; part of it is gaining confidence that what we say matters; part of it is owning that we want to be successful and that’s okay.

And then, of course, the number of people who are listening is going to shift as you grow. You may start with ten listeners and grow to a few hundred and then to a few thousand and then much more. Even the most famous and widely published authors started with a first piece of writing and a first published book.

This is a mixed media collage I made in 2008 entitled Jazz Palette.

That is the funny thing about truth.  Especially at any given moment.  That is why I love poetry.  It is timeless in its truths and it speaks to what is going on and the choices.  The only constant is the fluidity of truth and time as they share the same space.  I started ‘Tell It Slant Tuesday’ because it brings about the abstract and sentient emotions that are always tempered by grace and time.  Peace Out!

The truth is- Jazz on a page has been exclusionary and diminished by race and ethnicity.  It continues to vilify and politicize this artform by promoting separatism and discrimination and inequality in the same manner in which America was founded.  Many jazz writers and journalists continue to write about Jazz as a form of social and economic justice for African Americans.  Jazz is an artform.  It is defined as a means of creative expression, as poetry, song, or a specific creative genre, as the sonnet, based on traditional structures, standards, and principles according to Webster’s New World College Dictionary.  As a writer and a native daughter of jazz. I really want to know what it is like to be born into jazz, because all the written words about jazz so far turns out to be quite disquieting and lies on a canvas of discomfort. Understanding and appreciating “Jazz”  when characterized as a vanishing or dying art has placed this American artform under a lens that is marred by racism, chauvinism, provincial, insular and is socially depraved.  However, when witnessed and seen through innocence from the soul and inner world of jazz, it allows us to preserve something of value  and   we embrace jazz as nothing more than a healing, inspiring, transforming and awakening acoustic artform.   More to come….Peace & Love Out!  JBC 😎 & ❤

Jazz 4 the Holidaze! BackBeat ~ Creating a Counter Melody of Life ~ “Nothing More” (feat. Lily Costner) by the Alternate Routes

“The essentials of Jazz are: melodic improvisation, melodic invention, swing & instrumental personality.”  Mose Allison

This is an excerpt from my memoir The Sound I Felt in the Prelude section  entltled “HiStory” that captures a conversation I had with my father.  I always wondered  how he managed to use the Hindemith mathematical model to create the sound he created.  He decided to take a break from composing at the piano in our living room and motioned for me to come and sit next to him on the bench in the Spring of 1965.  I asked him how he started and turning toward me he said…

“Music has always been in my blood.  I began writing and arranging music when I was fourteen with the Barons of Rhythm.  I taught myself how to read, write and sight sing music charts.  I went to the library and found the Paul Hindemith method of music theory.   This theory was very complex and was based on the mathematical use of harmonic tones from one center to another using all 12 notes freely or randomly instead of the conventional style of  composing music that relied upon the music scale as a subset of the notes.

I would take an idea, melody or sound and have a rough idea ≈ the plan that focuses on the bottom notes and now becomes the counter melody of the sound or idea.

One day I decided that I wanted to go and see one of the greatest band leaders of my time  His name was Les Hite.  Les and his orchestra were performing in New York City @ 52nd Street, at the tender age of fourteen I knew I’d have to find a way to get in to see the band perform and to meet him in person.

It was Friday, May, 24th, 1944, 6:00 pm and it was now time for me to get dressed for my trip to 52nd Street Club.  I chose my favorite shirt that was made of beautiful brown silk with gold vertical stripes my mother made for my 13th birthday.  Smiling wryly he whispered… My mom chose it because it brought out my sultry almond shaped eyes and warm smile. I was popular with the boys and girls alike.  Although I excelled academically, my music class and teacher Miss Davenport inspired me the most.  You know, I formed my own band with guys from my neighborhood when I was 14.  The guys performed with me throughout my music career.  Frank Sinatra was doing his thing in North Newark; Sara was singing in the choir, a lot of great talent came out of New Jersey back in my day.  Back to the story− at that time, all I could dream and think about was meeting and talking to Les Hite.

So I gathered up train fare and headed to Union Station located on Market Street that was in to the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ which was predominately a Portuguese neighborhood.  Across from the train station was Market Street which had many open venders peddling their wares, fresh and ripe red delicious apples, bright marigold colored oranges; sunny yellow bananas; papayas; pineapples; mangos, it was so bright and festive that it looked like a garden of fruits and vegetables.  There was a seafood market and a meat market that sold the best and freshest cuts.  The street was of white cobble stone.  That gave it a very ethnic and unique feeling, like being on a street in the countryside of Portugal.  Union Station was a beautiful gold domed  building that stood out from the architecture of row houses on the surrounding narrow streets lined with Poplar trees shading the homes and the sidewalks.  Union Train Station was the second most popular cosmopolitan place where travelers from New York and around the world would pass through with the exception of Grand Central Station in New York City.  The station had a semi-circle driveway to the entrance made of cobblestone that matched the streets that surrounded the building creating an island in the center of a close knit neighborhood.

I arrived at the train station and had bought a fresh mango and an orange for dinner.   I walked up to the ticket window; the ticket agent was dressed in a dark blue outfit with gold epaulets and a hat.

Well young man what can I do for you?

I said with a smile, I would like a round trip ticket to New York City,.

The ticket clerk slid the ticket under the half moon shaped glass and I slid the $1.75 in return.

Over the loud speaker the clerk announced, “The 6:48 pm train to Manhattan now boarding on Track 14”.

I sprung to my feet and began running; I was so excited my feet barely touched the marble floor.  People were milling around toting luggage and carry-on’s the women were dressed in coats made of wool and cashmere with tams and hats on shoulder length waved hair.   They held little hands of children with warm coats and gloves with hats that tied under their chins.  The children quietly followed their folks, the girls with dolls and the boys carrying trucks.  I made it to Track 14 and saw the conductor toward the middle of the train.  I sprinted weaving in and out of the crowd reaching the center car where the conductor stood.  All Aboard! He motioned for me to board the train.  I hopped on and found an empty seat next to a group of young musicians dressed in dress pants and white shirts, one guy was placing a suitcase that held the charts for that evening’s performance in the storage above the seat.

I asked, can I sit with you guys?  They looked up and smiled and said Sure Man.  I introduced myself and we chatted about the gig and sight sang some of the charts that they were going to perform that night.  I was shocked to find out that it just so happened that they were band members of Les Hite’s Band.  They invited me to join them backstage.  I was so ecstatic I could hardly breathe.  We arrived at the Savoy and entered through the stage door entrance.  Stage hands were carrying the music stands and microphones to the stage.  Les Hite was in his dressing room talking with his road manager.  Les was cleaning his saxophone in his lap, a page for the manager sounded over the loud speaker.  The manager, dressed in casual slacks and a cashmere turtleneck green sweater stood up and started heading to the door and passed me on the way to the stage.  I took a deep breath, then I knocked on the door.

Les shouted Come In!

I tentatively entered; Les looked up and said Hi kid, what’s up! 

I have followed you and your band and I wanted to know how you do it, how you get that sound?

Les looked at him and laughed and said, it’s easy– you put the highs with the highs and the lows with the lows.  Les broke into laughter as he got up to head to the stage.

I was annoyed.  I couldn’t figure out why he did not take me seriously.  Turning, I said, I can do that, how about letting me be one of your copyists?  I am very good!

Les stopped, took a long, long look at me, okay Kid, you must have something going for you if  you could just walk up to me and ask for a copyist gig.  Come to my office tomorrow at 3 pm and Cal our head copyist will get you squared away.  Good Luck kid.   I shook Les’ hand and walked with him to the stage entrance where Les introduced me to Charlie his Road Manager. Les told Charlie, look out for him, he’s one of our new copyists.  I was on Cloud 9.  That was my ticket into the exciting world of Jazz.  I was now living my personal dream.  So, I joined the band and ran away from home at age 14 and I never looked back.  I knew I was on my way, ‘cause God, fate, or destiny wouldn’t allow me to fail now….”

Wishing you Happy Holidaze with a jazz back beat that is the prelude to the life that has been waiting for me.  It is what makes the sounds of my life come true and are so filled with the blessings and grace that God has given to all of us.  It is Nothing more….Peace & Love Out!  JBC 😎 & <3.
